From Easter to Pentecost and Beyond
“And so with Mary Magdalene and Peter, and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all its creatures, with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn.”
That expansive prayer has been part of our worship service since Easter Sunday. The seven week Easter season comes to a close on Sunday, May 12. The following Thursday, we celebrate the Ascension of Our Lord; and then, on Sunday, May 19, comes the Day of Pentecost, when the promised Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus’ followers. This day is also known as “the birthday of the church.” Images of fire and wind abound in the Pentecost story, and so the color for the day is red. You are invited to wear something red on May 19, as we celebrate and honor the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives and the life of the church.
